Just when you think it's safe to hitchhike in this town, something like this happens...
Today's Darwin Award goes to this woman was dumb enough to accept a ride from a stranger and is shocked when he tries to rape her.

Woman reports attack on U.S. 17
A woman who accepted a ride from a stranger from North Carolina said she was attacked by the man as they passed through Pawleys Island on U.S. 17.
A deputy from the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office found the victim near Debordieu on Sunday afternoon.
She said she had accepted a ride from the man in Myrtle Beach, in order to get to Conway.
The attack happened after the woman refused to have sex with the man, she said.
He then grabbed her cell phone and broke it, and she jumped out of the car.
Jody Dorsey Parker, 32, was charged with assault and battery and malicious injury to personal property.
A check of criminal records revealed that Parker was missing from Brunswick County, N.C., police said

Don't you hate it when the hitman that you hire to kill your boss turns out to be a cop?
Myrtle Beach woman pleads guilty in murder for hire case
Tuesday, Feb 19, 2008 - 08:42 PM Updated: 08:32 AM
By Jody Barr
In October, Horry County authorities arrested and charged a Myrtle Beach woman for paying thousands of dollars to have her former boss killed, or seriously injured.
Last Wednesday, 48-year-old Denise Means admitted guilt and accepted a plea deal to resolve the case.
Means worked for Darryl Detrick at Detrick's car wash on Highway 544 in 2007 as a cashier.
The Detricks fired Means last summer, then Detrick told News13 that's when the harassment started.
Then in October, Horry County police said Means met with a man and paid nearly $3,000 to have Detrick killed, or seriously injured.
Means pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy Wednesday.
A circuit court judge sentenced Means to 5 years in prison, then suspended the jail time in exchange for 5 years probation.
The court ordered Means to continue her mental illness treatments and medications, and to not have any contact with the victim, or any of Detrick's family.
A county magistrate set Means' bond at $100,000 in October and allowed Means to serve her time on bond under house arrest.
Last Wednesday, jail officials removed the home monitoring device from Means.
If Means violates any condition of her probation, she will serve the remaining time of her 5 year sentence in jail.

All Toxic Roads Lead to Marlboro County
Today’s secret toxic waste dump is brought to us courtesy of our friends in Marlboro County. Ironically, most of the residents thought that the neon green sunsets in the area were simply “Kodak Moments” until somebody noticed that the three eyed dogs running around town were just a bit out of the ordinary. In other news, town leaders and chamber officials are said to be examining all turtles for ninja abilities in hopes of competing with Myrtle Beach for tourist dollars.
Toxic waste dump found in Marlboro County
By Lindsay TynerPosted: Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 10:36 p.m.
Officials are investigating what they believe is a secret toxic waste dump at an old high school in Marlboro County.
An anonymous tip led the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control inside the abandoned Adamsville High School.
DHEC Hazmat workers had to wear protective suits to test mystery liquids found in gallon containers.
They say it is illegal not to dispose of the chemicals at a proper waste site.
Officials are not sure yet who is responsible for the materials left behind.

Law & Order-Surfside Beach Style
Just when Surfside Beach police have all crimes solved, someone has the nerve to put an ashtray on a counter. America ...land of the free, home of the... oh, never mind.
Smoking tickets are hot item in Surfside Beach
By Tom O’Dare
The Herald
"It was the most humiliating thing I’ve ever been through."Mark Atkins - Stadium Club owner Surfside Beach—Surfside Beach public safety director Andy Christenson said since the first of the year, his department has received 15 calls from folks reporting people smoking in town bars and buildings. From those calls, seven tickets have been issued. One of the businesses cited was the Stadium Club on Business 17.Stadium Club owner Mark Atkins said he was cited even though no one was smoking in the restaurant when the police came in.Atkins said he was given a $232 ticket because there were ashtrays on the bar.“They said the ashtrays meant I was promoting smoking,” he said. “I’ve been in business in Surfside Beach for 16 years. It was the most humiliating thing I’ve ever been through.”Other establishments getting smoking tickets included the Sundown Sports Pub, Borgata, Beer 30 and Surfside Bowling. The smoking ban was passed by the council in July of 2007 and went into effect in the fall. It prohibits smoking in public buildings, at town parks and recreation areas and on the beach within the town limits. It does not prohibit smoking in private residences or in a hotel and motel room designated as a “smoking room.”By all accounts, Surfside Beach’s smoking ban is the most stringent of all such ordinances passed in the state. The ordinance does not address the promotion of smoking or ashtrays.

When you care enough to send the very best

Nothing says I love you like a bottle of beer and a can of vienna sausages. “Sweetie, put on your best housecoat and put the rollers in your hair, we gonna drink this beer and eat these sausages and then Daddy’s gonna want some lovin.”
Luckily for us someone at the floral department of the Bi-lo in Socastee has a sense of humor. We’ll have to monitor the Sun News closely tomorrow because no doubt there will be a report of someone getting cut after bringing home this gift for Valentines Day.

Instead of pancakes, this poor guy got served a brass knuckle sandwich…
It seems that the best free entertainment to be had in town was yesterday at the Omega Pancake and Omelet House. According to the Sun News it looks like this whole thing went down like a scene out of Fight Club. Hopefully the key players will book a manager and take their show on the road turning up in parking lots of pancake houses all over the city.

Miller Lite party at my house this weekend, yall!

I can’t imagine that a case of Miller Lite is a hard sale in this town but now they’ve gone and sweetened the deal. I was making my daily morning stop at the Kangaroo when right before my eyes I noticed a large Miller Lite display with none other than a refund to be used toward gas for buying beer.
You gotta love this place. Our state has the highest incidence of drunk driving cases in the nation and we’re making sure that you have gas to do your next beer run. Sweet.

Beer spfcial anyone?

Save yourself a bunch of money by just substituting letters that kind of look like what you really need to get your message across. You can almost hear the wheels turning behind the scenes as they realize that they are fresh out of e's. " Why don't we just use an "f" in the place of an "e" and no one will be none the wiser". Spfcial looks close enough to special and were talking beer and it's on spfcial so really it's a win-win situation for all involved.

Pastor on mission trip detained in Russia
By Robert MorrisThe Sun News
A Conway pastor is being detained in Russia after authorities there found rifle rounds in his luggage intended as a gift on a mission trip, family and church officials said Tuesday.
The Rev. Phillip Miles, pastor of Christ Community Church in Conway, must remain in Russia through Friday for a formal hearing as to whether he broke the law by bringing the ammunition into the country, according to church officials' written statement.
"He's not in any sort of grave condition," said David Aylor, a nephew of Miles and Charleston attorney. "Relatively speaking, he's in good condition. He's not in any danger."
Russian officials found the bullets when Miles first arrived in Moscow on Jan. 29 as he headed to Perm, a city at the foot of the Ural Mountains bordering Siberia. The ammunition was confiscated and Miles was questioned, but allowed to continue on his trip.
On his way back Sunday, Miles was stopped at the Moscow airport again for further questioning about the bullets, which were intended as a gift for one of the pastors in Perm who is a hunting enthusiast, Aylor said.
Now, family and church members must wait until Friday to learn if Miles will be charged.
Because of privacy concerns, officials with Sen. Lindsey Graham's office said they have a policy against discussing any possible involvement in such cases. Likewise, U.S. State Department officials could not confirm whether the U.S. embassy has been contacted.
"This is a foreign government," Aylor said. "Even state-to-state, county-to-county, different places have different laws. So, when you're dealing with an entire different continent - the only thing people can do is pray."
Two other church members were traveling with Miles, but were allowed to return home.
Christ Community Church, a nondenominational church founded in 1981 and associated with Evangel Fellowship International, lists Russia as one of its short-term missions on its Web site. A trip in January 2007 included teaching Bible school and visiting an alcohol rehabilitation center.
Miles makes two or three trips to Russia every year, Aylor said.
"Since the fall of communism, he's been several, several times," Aylor said.
The family has not had any direct contact with Miles, but the State Department is keeping them informed, Aylor said. In the meantime, they are asking well-wishers to respect their privacy while the situation remains fluid, he said.
"At this point," Aylor said, "the thing that would be most helpful is just prayers for the family and respect for the family."

Myrtle Beach--We're ok with crazy
Ever feel like you're the only one making a fool of yourself on the golf course? Don't. In Myrtle Beach acting a fool is all the norm and the folks over at Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday wanted to let you know that were perfectly ok with you bringing your crazy relatives down for a game of golf. Apparently running around screaming like a lunatic and jumping into the pond doesn't even rate a second glace around here.

Drunk driver might have attracted a bit less attention to herself if she hadn't crashed into the courthouse
Tired of the NASCAR drivers getting all the press, Andrews woman decides to take matters into her own hands.
DUI suspect nearly drives into courthouse
By staff of The Sun News
An Andrews woman who nearly crashed into the Georgetown County Courthouse with a 1-year-old child in the car is now under arrest for driving under the influence, according to a press release from the Georgetown County Sheriff's Department.
Tamyra Middleton, 26, of Andrews, was arrested Thursday after police say she drove into a handicap access, onto the sidewalk and up the walkway to the front door of the courthouse.
"Sheriff’s deputies were able to get Middleton to stop the vehicle just before she crashed through the front door," the press release said.
She told police her husband was trying to kill her and their 1-year-old daughter. Police got the two inside the courthouse, where Middleton admitted the girl was not hers, that she was babysitting for her friend's sister, and there was nobody after them, the release said.
Middleton is being held at the Georgetown County Detention Center, and the child was returned to her mother.
